Impossibly Creative is a WordPress agency. What does that mean? Well, for starters it means that we use WordPress to build all of the sites we build. But what is WordPress? How can it help your small business website?
Content Management System
WordPress is a content management system (CMS). It takes all of your content – text, photos, videos, etc. – and makes it easy to manage through a series of things called posts and pages. By using a CMS, you completely avoid having to know code to make changes to your website. You just have to be able to type up something, just like in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Make a couple text changes and viola! You’ve updated your small business website.
But WordPress does a lot more as a CMS than just make it easier to update your content. It also combines all of your media (images, videos, audio files, etc.) into one library for easy collection and use. It also adds buttons to the editor to make adding an item from the media library super easy. Just a couple of clicks and you’ve got a new image in your post or page.
One of the strengths of WordPress is that what you get “out of the box” isn’t all that’s available to you. There’s an entire library of free and premium plugins – an industry term for expansion pack – that add functionality to your small business website. Want to add a contact form so customers can email you directly? There are several free and paid plugins that do that. The best part is, you don’t need a computer science degree to add one to your website! All it takes is a couple of clicks and your plugin is installed. Sure, you may have to follow a few directions to set it up, but a good plugin will make that easy for the technologically challenged.
You may now know what WordPress is from a computer software perspective, but that’s really only part of the story. WordPress is open-source software, which means it’s free to use and edit by anyone. As a result, there exists a huge community of people that work on WordPress to make it better every day. Throughout the world, there are regular meetups and annual conferences dedicated to WordPress and helping small business owners grow their knowledge. There’s bound to be one near you.
How to get started
Are you ready to get started with your small business website on WordPress? There are few ways to go about it. The first is to find a hosting company and start your site yourself. If you’re not a technical person, this may not be the right choice. The DIY route requires a bit of technical knowledge. Alternatively, you could hire a developer to build a site for you. That’s where we come in. As WordPress experts, we have all the knowledge and skills you need to get the job done.
